Experienced Senior Tax Accountant / Small Business Tax Advisor

Location: Pace Accounting | Maspeth, New York

Hours: Full-Time | In-Office

Salary: $85,000–$115,000 annually, depending on experience and qualifications

About the Position

We are an established accounting firm focused on providing high-quality accounting, tax, and advisory services to small-business owners.

We are looking for an experienced, knowledgeable tax professional who can work independently and take ownership of client relationships.

This is not an entry-level position and is not a role where you will need to be taught the fundamentals of tax accounting. We are looking for someone who can look at a client’s books and tax situation, understand what is happening, identify issues and opportunities, and determine what needs to be done—without constant supervision.

The ideal candidate will manage approximately 30–40 established small-business clients, serving as a trusted resource for both the business and its owners.

CPA or EA credentials are welcome but are not required. We value demonstrated knowledge, experience, judgment, and the ability to independently serve clients more than credentials alone.

What You’ll Do

  • Manage a portfolio of approximately 30–40 established small-business clients.
  • Review accounting records, reconcile accounts, and prepare financial statements and supporting workpapers.
  • Identify errors, inconsistencies, and items requiring attention.
  • Prepare federal and state tax returns for individuals, corporations, S corporations, partnerships, and trusts.
  • Manage client accounts, gather necessary information, and keep filings and deliverables on schedule.
  • Provide tax planning support and practical guidance to individuals and business owners.
  • Handle sales and use tax matters and advise clients regarding them.
  • Handle state and federal tax compliance matters.
  • Provide tax planning and consulting throughout the year.
  • Work directly with business owners to answer accounting and tax questions.
  • Identify opportunities to improve clients’ tax positions and financial situations.
  • Communicate tax recommendations in a clear, understandable manner and collaborate with colleagues to maintain accurate, timely work.
  • Manage deadlines and client deliveries independently.
  • Research tax questions and determine appropriate solutions.
  • Work collaboratively with our bookkeeping and accounting staff.
  • Escalate unusual or highly complex matters when appropriate.
  • Help onboard new clients and support their ongoing accounting needs.

What We’re Looking For

  • 10 or more years of relevant tax and accounting experience, preferably in a private/public tax accounting firm.
  • Extensive experience working with small and closely held businesses.
  • Strong hands-on experience preparing individual and business tax returns, including Forms 1040, 1120, 1120S, and 1065.
  • Experience with trusts and Form 1041 is valuable.
  • Ability to review a set of books and quickly identify problems.
  • Ability to communicate comfortably and professionally with business owners.
  • Strong tax research and problem-solving skills.
  • Organization and the ability to manage multiple client relationships.
  • Ownership of work and follow-through on issues to resolution.
  • Good judgment about when a situation requires additional review.
  • Interest in developing long-term client relationships.
  • Ability to manage client work independently, identify missing information, and recognize when additional research or guidance is needed.
  • Strong accounting fundamentals and experience with reconciliations and financial statement preparation.
  • Clear written and verbal communication, attention to detail, and strong organizational skills.
  • CPA or Enrolled Agent preferred, not required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance preferred, not required.

Technology & Additional Experience

  • Proficiency with QuickBooks Online.
  • Experience with Intuit ProSeries preferred.
  • Strong Microsoft Excel skills, including formulas and data import/export.
  • Comfort with Microsoft Office, client management systems, and document management tools.
  • Experience with sales tax filings, FBAR filings, and specialized industries or tax matters is a plus.

Compensation

The salary range is $85,000–$115,000, based on relevant experience, technical skills, and ability to manage client work independently.

Schedule

  • January: Monday–Friday, 9 a.m.–5 p.m.
  • Tax season, February 1–April 15: Monday–Saturday, 9 a.m.–7 p.m. Extended hours and Saturdays are required during this period.
  • April 16–May 31: Monday–Friday, 9 a.m.–5 p.m.
  • June 1–December 31: Monday–Thursday, 9 a.m.–5 p.m. Fridays off.
  • This is an in-office position. Remote work can be discussed once you are established.

Work Location

This is an in-office position in Maspeth, New York.

Once you are established, we will consider remote work based on performance and business needs. This arrangement is not guaranteed.

Why Join Pace?

  • Competitive salary.
  • Retirement plan.
  • Employee health benefits.
  • Paid time off.
  • Exceptional work-life balance outside of tax season, including a four-day workweek from June through December.
  • Predictable regular hours outside tax season.
  • Direct client relationships and meaningful ownership of your work.
  • A collaborative, ten-person office where your experience and contributions are valued.
  • Opportunities to broaden your expertise across a variety of clients.

Our Approach to Work-Life Balance

Tax season is busy—and we recognize that.

We also believe that working in tax accounting shouldn’t mean sacrificing your personal life year-round.

Outside the traditional busy season, our firm emphasizes reasonable hours, flexibility, and a life outside of work.

If you’re an experienced tax professional who enjoys helping business owners but is tired of the culture of constant overtime, we would like to talk with you.

Why This Position Is Different

This is an opportunity to become a trusted advisor to established business owners, not just another person preparing tax returns.

You will have the opportunity to develop long-term client relationships, provide meaningful tax advice, and have significant ownership over your work.

We are looking for someone who can come in, learn our systems and clients, and ultimately say:

“Give me my clients and let me take care of them.”

If that describes you, we’d love to hear from you.
